Mediator Profile Ms. Jamela A. Ali is President of the Mediation Institute of Guyana Inc. having been elected on the 8 June 2011. She is a trained Mediator providing mediation services. 2003 - Appointed as a Mediator by the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana. Conducted successfully several court connected and other mediations, negotiations and facilitations involving family members, Guyana and international Companies and Guyanese. Matters mediated include property disputes, mining law disputes, family law disputes -division of property, slander, religious disputes, monetary claims and damages. 24 May 2010 - Elected as Director to the Mediation Institute of Guyana Inc. at its first Annual General Meeting. August 2010 - Reviewed and contributed to the Strategic Plan designed for the Mediation Institute of Guyana Inc. 8 June 2011 - Elected as President of the Mediation Institute of Guyana Inc. at its second Annual General Meeting. 19 & 21 January 2012 - Finalised the Expenses/ Revenue Worksheet for MIG and the Financial Sustainability Work Plan and also prepared a Report of the Expenses, Revenue and Financial Sustainability Plan for 2012.
Speeches 28 October 2011 - delivered a speech on "The Process of Mediation and the Benefits" at the Mediation Forum under the theme "Embracing the Potential of Mediation" hosted by the Mediation Institute of Guyana Inc. (MIG) at Oceanview Hotel, Guyana. 28 October 2011 - delivered the Welcome Speech at the Mediation Forum under the theme "Embracing the Potential of Mediation" hosted by the Mediation Institute of Guyana Inc. (MIG) at Oceanview Hotel, Guyana. 30 June 2010 - delivered a speech on the “Benefits of Mediation and the Mediation Process in Guyana ” and also participated in a role play of a Mediation. A substantial portion of the speech on Mediation was published under the title AN INTRODUCTION TO MEDIATION in The New Guyana Bar Review Volume 2 Issue 1: May 2008 (A Guyana Bar Association publication) and Mediation World. 1st April 2008 - delivered a speech promoting the benefits of Mediation and gave examples of successful mediations at a symposium held at New Amsterdam, Berbice. 31 March 2008 - delivered a speech on Mediation in Guyana and gave examples of successful mediations at a symposium held at the Suddie Supreme Court, Essequibo.
Mediation Training and Qualifications Certificate in Mediator Skills Training 2003 - 24 hours course in Mediator Skills Training conducted by the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana & the Carter Center of Atlanta, USA and received a Certificate. Trainers included Canadian, American and Caribbean Mediators, Mr. Richard J. Moore, President of MDR Associates Conflict Resolution Inc. Canada, Mr. Steven Weller of Policy Studies Inc., Colorado, USA and Ms. Deborah Mendez-Bowen of Trinidad. Mediation Training Session 7 April 2004 - follow up training session for all mediators on the Court Roster conducted by Messrs. Steven Weller and Richard J. Moore. Refresher Course in Mediation 29 -30 March 2006 - 2 day Refresher Course in Mediation held by the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana, the GBA and USAID-GDCCR to encourage the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation in Guyana. Conducted by Ms. Donna Parchment and Professor Britton from the University of Guyana (UG). 28 November 2007 - 1 December 2007 - 32 hours Advanced Mediation Training conducted by Mr. Richard J. Moore, LL.B., C. Med., C. Arb. from MDR Associates Conflict Resolution Inc., Ottawa, Canada on behalf of USAID-GDCCR Project & the High Court of the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana and was awarded a Certificate on Completion. Refresher Advanced Mediation Training II 2 December 2010 - Refresher Mediation Training (8 hours) conducted by Dr. Steven Weller and Mr. Richard Moore and sponsored by USAID-GEP. MEDIATION TRAINER Certificate as Mediation Trainer 26 - 29 March 2008 - 32 hours Training of Trainers Course conducted by Richard Moore, LL.B C. Med., C. Arb. and Steven Weller, J.D, PhD on behalf of USAID-GDCCR Project & the High Court of the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana and was awarded a Certificate on Completion. Certificate as Faculty Member 2 -5 April 2008 - Appointed as a Faculty Member and awarded a Certificate for service as faculty in Advanced Mediation Training of Mediators. Mediation Trainer for a group of 26 Mediators. Facilitator/Trainer 14 - 17 May 2008 - Appointed by USAID GDCCR to serve as a Facilitator for the training of Mediators in the Advanced Mediation Training Course (32 hours) of 21 Mediators and was awarded a Certificate for service as faculty. 21 - 24 May 2008 - Training of Mediators in a Basic Mediation Training Course for Justices of Peace (JPs) and Commissioners of Oath (32 hours). Awarded a Certificate for service as faculty. 17 June 2009 - Appointed as a Facilitator by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) to conduct a Public Consultation on the Draft Standard Specification for the Labelling of Retail Packages of Tobacco Products. NEGOTIATION Training 3-4, 6 June 2011 - Negotiation Leadership Training conducted by Dr. Daniella Fridl and Ms. Jayne Nucete, of CIDCM and ICONS Project, sponsored by USAID/GEP, Guyana. Awarded a Certificate on completion.
Conferences, Workshops, Symposiums attended 19 January 2012 - Follow up session on Financial Sustainability Work plan for the Mediation Institute of Guyana Inc. (MIG) with Consultant Shannon E. St. John. 13 January 2012 – Presentation on "The Role of the Attorney at Law in the Mediation process" by Hon Madam Justice Charmaine Pemberton, High Court Judge, Supreme Court, Trinidad. 9 & 14 November 2011 – Participated in two sessions of Financial Sustainability Planning for Non-Governmental Organisations in Guyana conducted by Consultant Shannon E. St. John and developed a draft expenses and revenue worksheet plan for MIG. MIG Mediation Forum 28 October 2011 - Mediation Forum under the theme "Embracing the Potential of Mediation" hosted by the Mediation Institute of Guyana Inc. (MIG) at Oceanview Hotel, Guyana with presentations by Mr. Carl A. Singh, Chancellor of the Judiciary of Guyana, Mr. Justice Vasheist Kokoram, Chairman of the Mediation Board of Trinidad & Tobago and Ms. Jamela A. Ali, President, MIG. 28 October 2011 - Mediation Forum under the theme "Embracing the Potential of Mediation" hosted by the Mediation Institute of Guyana Inc. (MIG) for Judges and Attorneys at Law at Georgetown Club, Guyana with a presentation by Mr. Justice Vasheist Kokoram.
Workshop - Mediation Orientation for Lawyers 9 December 2010 - Court Connected Mediation Orientation for lawyers. Conference on Alternative Dispute Resolution 30 June 2010 - Public Forum on Alternative Dispute Resolution and delivered a speech on the “Benefits of Mediation and the Mediation Process in Guyana”. Also participated in a role play of a Mediation. The conference was held by the United Nations Association of Guyana (UNAG) and the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL) and sponsored by USAID. Conference - Dispute Resolution & Restorative Justice 9-12 July 2009 - American and Caribbean Law Initiative (ACLI) Conference on Dispute Resolution and Restorative Justice in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and received a Certificate of Participation. Symposium in Berbice 1st April 2008 - two hour symposium to encourage the use of ADR and Mediation in Guyana which was held at New Amsterdam, Berbice and was sponsored by the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana, the GBA and USAID-GDCCR. Symposium in Essequibo 31 March 2008 - two hour symposium to encourage the use of ADR and Mediation in Guyana which was held at the Suddie Supreme Court, Essequibo and sponsored by the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana, GBA and USAID-GDCCR. Delivered a speech on the benefits of Mediation and gave examples of successful mediations. Symposium ADR and Mediation 27 March 2006 - two hour symposium held by the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana, GBA and USAID-GDCCR to encourage the use of ADR and Mediation in Guyana. Ms. Donna Parchment, an ADR Consultant and CEO, Dispute Resolution Foundation, Jamaica along with Mr. Paul Hinds gave an overview of Mediation. Mediation/Case Management Workshop February 2005 - Mediation/Case Management Workshop in which the key presenters were Master Robert Beaudoin of the Superior Court of Justice, Ottawa, Canada and Mr. Ian Stauffer, Barrister and Judge of the Small Claims Court, Carleton, Canada. Mediation Meeting 31 March 2004 - follow up meeting on Mediation conducted by Mr. Steven Weller.
Arbitration Participated in Arbitration proceedings with an International Company Sociedade De Construcoes Soares Da Costa S.A. from Portugal and the Attorney General on behalf of the Government of Guyana.
